Australian universities expand AI education partnerships and hands-on programs

OpenAI says UNSW Sydney, the University of Sydney, La Trobe University and Adelaide University are working with it to broaden access to AI tools and bring AI into education. In an OpenAI-commissioned survey, 81% of 1,018 Australian university students said they used AI several times a week; university plans range from ChatGPT Edu rollouts to curriculum and cybersecurity work.

Full Report

In an article published November 5, 2026, OpenAI described collaborations with UNSW Sydney, the University of Sydney, La Trobe University and Adelaide University to expand access to AI tools and connect them with teaching and practical projects. An OpenAI-commissioned survey of 1,018 Australian university students aged 18 and over, conducted August 3–7, found that 81% used AI several times a week, including 33% who used it multiple times a day. Twenty-eight percent had built an AI agent or assistant for study, work or personal life. Seventy-nine percent wanted more opportunities to use advanced AI tools on real-world projects, and the same share was interested in applying AI to challenges such as health, climate, science or cybersecurity.

The university plans vary in scale and focus. UNSW Sydney is rolling out ChatGPT Edu in stages to more than 80,000 students and staff, and plans to incorporate generative AI foundations and Codex into courses, with opportunities through hackathons and industry projects. UNSW Sydney had announced its strategic partnership with OpenAI on September 8, 2026; the newer article describes staged expansion and educational integration. The University of Sydney plans to provide ChatGPT Edu to all students in Semester 1, 2027, following a trial, and is establishing a $1 million AI Sustainability Research and Innovation Fund.

La Trobe University says all 3,500 staff already have access to ChatGPT Edu and plans to extend access to its 45,000 students and staff in the first quarter of 2027. It also says it is launching a Bachelor of AI Engineering (Honours), with its first cohort in 2027, and an AI MBA program. Adelaide University is among the first higher-education institutions using OpenAI Daybreak Blue for authorised defensive security work, including vulnerability discovery, secure code review, malware analysis, incident response and patch validation.

Why This Matters

The survey points to substantial student use of AI and demand for practical experience; the announced programs connect that demand with campus access, coursework and cybersecurity applications. For students, the practical effect will depend on how each institution delivers access, hands-on opportunities and guidance.
