Google Rolls Out Gemini Skills, Beginning a Transition From Gems

Full Report

On September 30, Google announced that Skills were beginning a global rollout in Gemini chat, with Google Workspace business, enterprise, nonprofit, and education customers set to get the functionality in the coming weeks. Users can save instructions as a Skill and reuse one by typing a forward slash and its name in the prompt bar. Google’s examples include preparing presentations, matching a writing style, and generating multiple perspectives.

Skills can be created from chats, combined for larger tasks, and supplied with reference files such as text documents, PDFs, and images. The launch also starts a transition from Gems: Google says Skills will replace Gems and existing Gems will migrate automatically when Gems are discontinued. Google lists the end of Gems support as November for personal accounts, March 2027 for Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit customers, and June 2027 for Workspace education customers.

Why This Matters

Reusable instructions become callable within Gemini chat and can be combined with other Skills or reference files. For existing Gems users, Google’s published support schedule and automatic-migration plan clarify the transition path.
